Fall Fire Safety Check

As the weather starts to cool and we spend more time indoors, September is a great time to give your home's fire safety a quick check before fireplace, candle, and heating season begins.

A few simple precautions now can help keep your home—and the people you love—safer all season long.

🚨 TEST YOUR ALARMS

Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and make sure they're installed in the appropriate areas throughout your home. Check their age, batteries, and manufacturer recommendations for replacement.

🔥 PREP YOUR FIREPLACE & CHIMNEY

Before lighting the first fire of the season, have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned as appropriate. Keep furniture, décor, and other flammable materials safely away from the fireplace.

🧯 CHECK YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Make sure you have accessible fire extinguishers, check their condition and expiration or replacement information, and make sure the adults in your home know where they are and how to use them.

🍳 GIVE THE KITCHEN A SAFETY CHECK

Keep towels, paper products, and other flammable items away from the stovetop. Stay nearby while cooking and keep cooking surfaces free of grease buildup.

🚪 REVIEW YOUR FAMILY'S ESCAPE PLAN

Make sure everyone knows how to get out of the home in an emergency. Identify two exits from rooms when possible, choose a meeting place outside, and practice the plan together.
