With kids home from school, extra fans running, outdoor lighting, and increased appliance use, summer often means more strain on your home’s electrical system.

One of the most common (and preventable) household safety risks is overloaded outlets and extension cords.

Here are a few quick reminders to help keep your home safe this season:

✔ Avoid plugging multiple high-energy appliances into the same outlet
✔ Replace damaged cords or loose plugs immediately
✔ Use outdoor-rated extension cords for exterior use only
✔ Keep cords away from rugs, furniture, and walkways
✔ Test smoke detectors and replace batteries if needed
✔ Make sure surge protectors are not overloaded

Another good habit? Take a quick walk through your home and feel outlets or plugs that are warm to the touch—this can sometimes indicate an electrical issue worth having inspected.

Summer should feel comfortable, safe, and stress-free for your family, and small preventative steps can go a long way toward protecting your home.

Homeowner Reminder

If your home is older or you’ve noticed flickering lights, tripped breakers, or warm outlets, it may be worth scheduling a professional electrical inspection.
